Before anyone says it, this has nothing to do with Frozen. (okay maybe a little) But I’ve actually wanted to draw a racebent version of Jack for a while now. It started when two things popped into my head after watching ROTG and observing the fandom’s hype over Jack and well…lot’s of things. (NO I’M NOT TRYING TO SINGLE ANYONE OUT, just venting is all V_V )
1. This is just something I’ve personally noticed after going through the large number of movies, shows and cartoons that I’ve watched. It’s the fact that the black or very dark skinned male character is rarely (if not ever X_X) portrayed as the “Attractive young man or pretty boy, male lead that boys want to be or girls would gush over”. Now maybe it doesn’t sound like a big deal to you, but to me it is. Whether they be fictional or real, I didn’t have a male poc character I could relate to as a child. I obviously didn’t notice this WHEN I was a child, but looking back I can see how much it’s played into my self-esteem. I devalued myself for such a long time, just because of my appearance and often compared myself to my classmates (who all had lighter skin and smooth hair.)
2. As horrible and cynical as it may sound, I also couldn’t help but wonder “Would Jack (Or any other male character that’s considered attractive) have as my fans as he does if he wasn’t white? Or Asian? Or Hispanic? Or any other sort of poc character that could be morphed to have a lighter skin tone?” Would fans still ship them with other male characters (because I rarely see black or dark skinned characters in the slash comm. >_>) or other characters in general? Would they still analyze the character’s background so deeply?” You see where I’m going with this.
No, I’m not trying to say that darker skinned/black people have it worse than any other ethnicity that’s portrayed in the media (Everyone’s been screwed over at some point). I’m just saying, as a person who wants to work in the animation industry, I want to be comfortable knowing that the cartoons I’m working on will able to reach out to children of all kinds of different demographics and help them realize that they should be happy with themselves…..and that is my two cents. T3T Sorry for the long post.
